After being humiliated by costly errors that led to their defeat in Super Bowl V the Dallas Cowboy charged into the 1971 season vowing revenge. The team powered by the arm of Roger Staubach and protected by their famous “Doomsday Defense” led the NFC East with an 11-3 record then beat the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Now the only thing that stood between the Cowboys and their first Super Bowl championship was the undefeated Miami Dolphins. Though the Dolphins were the undisputed favorites the Cowboys completely dominated the game played on January 16 1972 in New Orleans not allowing Miami a single touchdown. Along the way to their 24-3 win Dallas set three Super Bowl records: most rushing yards (252) the most first downs (23) and the fewest points allowed (3). It wasn’t until 2018 that another team would hold their opponents touchdown-less in a Super Bowl.
This ring was presented to Cowboys punter Ron Widby for his part in Dallas’ first Championship season. Widby ranked as the third-best punter in the NFL that year and earned himself a place in that year’s Pro Bowl. During Super Bowl V Widby punted five times averaging 37.2 yards with a long of 47 yards. Widby’s 14-karat gold Super Bowl VI ring has the Cowboys Blue Star on the top surmounted and surrounded by sparkling real diamonds and encircled with raised type reading “DALLAS COWBOYS WORLD CHAMPIONS.” The left shank features the iconic Cowboys helmet with “R. Widby” and his number “10” in raised letters. The right Shan has the NFL logo and Lombardi Trophy topped with “1971” in raised letters. The interior has the “Balfour 14K” hallmark. Measuring a size 11 and weighing 34 grams the ring shows little wear and represents a shining example of the team that made the Dallas Cowboys an American institution.
