In 1971, Bruce Lee returned to Hong Kong after a decade in Hollywood. The occasion was his first starring role in a major motion picture. The film was “The Big Boss,” produced by the Hong Kong-based Golden Harvest film production company. The movie was a wild success, grossing 500 times its original cost and making Bruce Lee the world’s best-known martial arts action star. Lee continued his relationship with Golden Harvest, and the company later co-produced Lee’s directorial debut, “The Way of the Dragon.” This candid shot of the martial arts legend was taken during the filming of “The Big Boss” in 1971. The front of the photo shows warm toning throughout and a name has been handwritten in ballpoint along the top portion. The reverse has an Aug 25 1972 date stamp and various handwritten notations. The photograph measures 8” x 10” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
