Jim Washington was a 6'6" forward from Villanova that played for several NBA teams, a solid pro.
In 1971 he was traded by the Philadelphia 76ers to the Atlanta Hawks for another forward, Bill Bridges. Presented here is Washington's Hawks jersey, a wonderful, colorful style that brings Jim's Hawks teammate "Pistol Pete" Maravich to mind. It is a Rawlings size 44. Jim Washington has boldly signed the front of the jersey.
What is remarkable to note here, with a cost-conscious mindset for most teams of that era, when the NBA was far from the global-enterprise it is now, the Hawks actually re-purposed the jersey previously worn by Bill Bridges, doing some sewing and patching and converting #32 to #12, reissuing it to the newly acquired Washington. With the big money they were paying "Pistol Pete" the Atlanta team had to save money wherever else they could, I suppose.
Bridges' name change and number change are still noticeable on jersey. So this is actually a jersey with game use for two different players, that were traded for each other! Ponder that.
You might have thought this might have happened in the NBA pioneer era of 1951-52, but in 1971-72? Classic.
