This is an outstanding artifact from Ralph Simpson a high-scoring guard and small forward who was a five-time All-Star for the Denver Rockets/Nuggets in the American Basketball Association in the early 1970s later playing with three other NBA franchises and a return trip to Denver after the ABA/NBA merger in 1976. A high school teammate of 2015 Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Spencer Haywood in Detroit he joined the Rockets after two years at Michigan State (club would change to Nuggets mascot in 1974). He had his finest season in 1971-72 when he averaged 27.4 points per game; for his 11-year career he scored 11785 points and is the leading scorer for Denver for the period when the club played in the ABA. This Size 46 shooting shirt is a heavy black knit with orange white and black elastic collar sleeves and waist. The embroidered Rockets patch is sewn to the front left breast and his name in block letters tackle twill is sewn to a white nameplate on the back. A Wilson tag appears at the back of the collar. The shirt shows excellent game use with a good deal of puckering to the white nameplate and the Rockets patch on the front. Provenance is enhanced with a photo copy of a Wirephoto showing Simpson wearing the shirt during a postgame celebration; dating the shirt to the 1970s is further validated by the Schlitz beer cans on the floor.
