Dick Stuart was a genuine slugging first baseman for six teams over his 10-year major league career most notably with the Pirates and the Red Sox. While sportswriters authors and popular folklorists might quibble about the first baseman description Stuart's notoriously poor fielding probably wasn't as wretched as a half-century of casual retelling has made it out to be. Still due largely to that unflattering reputation he ends up challenging Frank Howard for having the coolest array of nicknames a roster that includes - in order of prominence - Dr. Strangeglove Stonefingers and The Ancient Mariner that last being shared with Gaylord Perry a bit of nifty nicknamesmanship where the same nickname has related but not precisely identical explanations. For Stuart's you need a bit of familiarity with English literature; for Perry all you have to do is live in Seattle. Stuart hit 228 home runs in all and was elected to the All-Star team in 1961. While Stuart never led the league in home runs he finished in the top 10 in five seasons (195961 196364). As a minor league player Stuart smashed 66 home runs for the Lincoln club of the Class-A Western League in 1956; it remains one of the highest totals in the history of minor-league baseball. This representation is a California Angels home flannel worn by Stuart during the 1969 season. The sleeve endings and collar are trimmed with a red/midnight navy braid. The Spalding tag appears on the back of the collar; the washing instructions tag is on the lower-front tail directly beneath attractive green stitching of "Stuart 46 69." The jersey front sports the team nickname Angels in old English font with red felt on midnight navy. The back No. 25 is in red felt on midnight navy apparently a number change having been done by the team in years after Stuart's tenure (Stuart wore No. 5 when he was with the Angels). The jersey is in solid condition although the 100th anniversary patch has been removed from the left sleeve and the bottom of seven buttons is missing on the front. It's truly a wonderful gamer from a genuine slugger and iconoclast from the 1960's era.

Includes a Letter of Provenance from The Newport Sports Museum.
