SCP Auctions is proud to present this Manchester United jersey worn by Sir Bobby Charlton on May 15, 1969, in the second leg of the European Cup semifinal against AC Milan at Old Trafford. Charlton scored the only goal of the match that night in a 1-0 United victory. The shirt comes with MEARS authentication and a letter of provenance from Romano Fogli, Milan’s Italian international midfielder, who faced Charlton in that memorable European Cup and kept the jersey in his personal collection for more than half a century.
United came into the 1968-69 campaign as reigning champions of Europe. The year before, Charlton had captained Matt Busby’s side to the 1968 European Cup at Wembley and scored twice in the 4-1 extra-time win over Benfica. That made United the first English club to lift the trophy, ten years after the Munich air disaster that Charlton himself had survived. By then he was already a World Cup winner with England in 1966 and the 1966 Ballon d’Or winner. By the end of his storied career with the Three Lions and Red Devils, Charlton would largely be regarded as the most decorated European footballer ever. To this day he remains on the short list among the greatest attacking players in the history of the game.
The defense of their title brought United to a semifinal with Nereo Rocco’s AC Milan, the masters of Italy’s tactical defensive style known as catenaccio. On April 23, Milan won the first leg 2-0 at the San Siro in front of 80,000 fans. Three weeks later, there were 63,103 packed into Old Trafford for the return. Scoreless with 20 minutes left in regulation, Charlton finally broke through Milan’s famously stubborn defense to make it 1-0 and set up a frantic finish. Despite relentless late pressure, including a Denis Law effort that many in the stadium believed had crossed the line, United could not find the equalizer. Milan went through 2-1 on aggregate and beat Ajax 4-1 in the final in Madrid. It was the last great European push of the Busby era.
The long-sleeved white jersey made by Umbro has a red crew-neck collar and red ribbed cuffs. For whatever reason, United players wore their home red kits in the first leg in Milan and then sported their white away shirts in the second leg at Old Trafford. A large red felt #9, Charlton’s customary number, is stitched to the back. The front has no badge or maker’s logo, as was standard at the time. Proper Umbro tagging appears within the collar and the Manchester-based apparel brand’s logo is again labeled in yellow on the right tail. The shirt shows outstanding evidence of wear with heavy pilling to the knit fabric, soiling stains (right shoulder and tail), and noticeable stretching at the pleat lines. It has been well-preserved and retains ideal display quality.
Charlton’s Man U jerseys rarely come to market, especially one tied to a specific European Cup match in which he scored, with provenance from an opposing player to boot. An exceptional relic from a magical Manchester night on the hallowed grounds of Old Trafford.
Authentication and Provenance
The shirt has been examined by MEARS, whose letter of authenticity confirms proper specifications for a Charlton gamer as well as adequate wear. A dearth of quality images from '69 European Cup matches makes a conclusive photo-match essentially impossible. Included is a signed letter from Romano Fogli (1938-2021), a midfielder for Torino, Milan, Bologna, Catania and the Italian National Team. Fogli states in his native Italian, that the #9 shirt belonged to Bobby Charlton, whom he faced while playing for Milan in the European Cup, and that it was part of the collection of jerseys he accumulated throughout his career (presumably from post-match player swaps) The ‘69 semifinal was the only meeting between Milan and Manchester United during Fogli’s time at the club.
