Andy Etchebarren was in the right place at the right time in the spring of 1966. Tagged to be a third string backstop with the Orioles Etchebarren found himself as the team’s starting catcher when injuries sidelined the two other Baltimore receivers. Etchebarren rose to the occasion catching the majority of the team’s games for the next two years. This jersey was donned by Etchebarren during the 1968 season in which he batted .233 with 5 homers for a team in the process of building a dynasty that would rule the AL for the next half decade.
The home white flannel jersey has “Orioles” arched above Etchebarren’s number “8” in orange and black. The collar and arm openings are trimmed in orange and black and a Wilson size 42 label is sewn in the lower left front tail. A white strip tag with “1968-1” chain stitched in black is sewn below the Wilson label and Etchebarren has signed his long name below this in black marker. “ETCHEBARREN” is sewn across the back with his number “8” below in orange and black. The all-original jersey certainly shows signs of wear but remains in great condition with light toning and some loose threads. The orange and black graphics are still quite bright against the creamy white flannel. A very attractive example of this classic O’s home jersey sourced from a reliable Orioles collector.
