Don Larsen owns the greatest pitching performance in World Series history. No dispute. A perfect game against the Dodgers in 1956. What about second best? Aside from Larsen’s perfecto there have been zero no-hitters pitched in a World Series game. So that brings us to one-hitters. There have been four single-pitcher one-hitters in the World Series including one for the 1967 Impossible Dream Red Sox that the Fenway faithful will never forget.
Jim Lonborg pitched it on Oct. 5 1967 in Game 2 a 5-0 win at Fenway Park against the formidable St. Louis Cardinals to pull the Red Sox even in the series. And four days later the American League’s Cy Young Award winner that year came back to beat the Cardinals 3-1 on a three-hitter in St. Louis ruining the Cards’ plan to clinch the World Series on their own turf. Lonborg lost his shutout bid on Roger Maris’ two-out home run in the ninth inning.
Presented here is a rare full unused ticket to game 2 of the 1967 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals that was played on October 5th at Fenway Park. In addition to Lonborg’s heroic pitching performance the game also saw Triple Crown winner Carl Yastrzemski log 2 HR's and 4 RBI. The ticket has a NM-MT appearance but a faint crease warranted a technical grade of VG 3 from PSA.
