Tom Seaver came to the Mets via a strange lottery in 1966 whereby the team literally won the rights to him by having their name picked out of a hat. Seaver was an immediate star selected as an All-Star in his first season when he won 16 games for a Mets team that won just 61 games the prior season and captured Rookie of the Year honors. An intelligent hard-working perfectionist and the quintessential professional Seaver was the first true star for the Mets and led them to their miracle World Championship in 1969 when he won his first of three Cy Young Awards. In his 10 years in New York from 1967 to 1977 he won 25% of the Mets' games.
