In 1967 Ernie Nevers was awarded the inaugural Sportsmens World Award for Football. Created and sponsored annually by the Sportsmens Club of the City of Hope the award serves to recognize the worlds foremost athletes as determined by a committee composed of representatives of the nations (USA) press media and sportscasters. Initial awards were granted in 1967 at Los Angeles. A standout running back at Stanford University Nevers in the 1925 Rose Bowl against the University of Notre Dame and the famous Four Horsemen backfield played all 60 minutes in the game and rushed for 114 yards more yardage than all the Four Horsemen combined. He was named the 1925 Rose Bowl Player of the Game. Nevers went on to play professional football with both the Duluth Eskimos and St. Louis Browns of the National Football League. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. The gold Sportsmens World Award statue which sits on a black-and-white marble base stands 19 tall and weighs just over 15 pounds.
