Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath seemed a perfect fit for New York. His brash cocky attitude combined with a rifle arm and a penchant for winning made him the toast of the "Big Apple" during the late 1960's. His legendary "guaranteed win" over the heavily favored Colts in Super Bowl III only cemented his status as one of the most popular sports heroes of the modern era. Naturally his rookie card is held with a similarly exalted status among collectors making it arguably the most coveted football card ever produced.
Graded NM-MT+ 8.5 by PSA the offered example is one of only two examples graded at this lofty tier with four examples graded higher (both MINT 9). This is a superb specimen of the highly condition sensitive short-printed card. The offered Namath projects incredible vibrancy in its yellow background color outstanding registration for the 1965 "SP" category and a distinctive absence of the production's usual print imperfections and overspray. The corners of this card are very sharp presenting as MINT to the naked eye. Centering is good for the issue though positioning is about 60/40 towards the right. toward the right. Given the cards pristine overall appearance this is perhaps the only discernable justification for withholding a MINT 9 assessment. Simply this is the among the absolute elite Namath rookie cards ever offered at auction. In fact only five other example exist in equal or better grade out of more than 1100 copies reviewed by PSA to date.
