The San Diego State Aztecs men’s track and field team was victorious in the NCAA Division II outdoor championships held at Long Beach State University in 1965. The team finished with 67 points, 21 points clear of second place Luther, which had 46. In the team competition, athletes' individual performances earn points for their institution and the team with the most points receives the NCAA team title in track and field. The SDSU team in 1965 was led by coach Charles (Choc) Sportsman, who would help the team repeat as champs in 1966.
This offered trophy awarded to San Diego State University for the track & field programs grand feat is made of wood and features multiple metallic placcards. The top plaque reads “NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION FOUNDED 1906.” Underneath that is a banner which reads “NATIONAL COLLEGE DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP.” An image of a runner is accompanied by “TRACK & FIELD CHAMPION 1965” at the base of the trophy, which wieghs 9.2 lbs. and measures 20" tall, 14" wide and 4" deep. Aside from some edge wear from handling and storage, it remains in excellent all-original, problem-free condition. It was on display for many years as part of the Breitbard Hall of Fame collection at the San Diego Hall of Champions museum. (SCP was the official auction house of the San Diego Hall of Champions Collection when it was presented to the market in the fall of 2017.)
