Wally Moon was a fast starter socking a home run in his very first MLB at-bat for the St. Louis Cardinals and then keeping things rolling through that first season in 1954 to earn NL Rookie of the Year honors against some stiff competition (Aaron and Banks). A fine leftfielder with a solid arm Moon also played in right and center as well as first base. As a Dodger he made his second All-Star team in 1959 -- his first in L.A. -- helping the team take home their first championship on the West Coast. The next season Moon won the Gold Glove Award. A career .289 hitter Moon hit 142 home runs with 661 RBI in 1457 games.
This home jersey dates to the '64 campaign Moon's second-to-last of his career. The front left tail has Wilson size 40 tagging with a "Moon" swatch and "1964" sewn below. The classic "Dodgers" logo in blue felt is sewn across the chest with No. "17" in red felt; that same number appears in larger blue felt on the back. In 1966 it appears that Moon's #9 was changed and reissued by the team (a common practice in those days) most likely to Hector Valle or Jim Barbieri who each wore #17 at some point during the '66 season. (This is further backed up by missing MEARS paperwork for this jersey that we found online.) Overall the vintage flannel comes in decent condition for its age showing heavy wear and some structural damage to the blue felt letters and numbers. The changed numbers exhibit age consistent with the rest of the shirt.
