Torches from the 1964 Tokyo Games are among the scarcest in the hobby. This charcoal-colored torch was used during the relay for the 1964 TokyoSummer Games the first Olympiad to take place in Asia. After lighting in Greece the Olympic flame was transported by special aircraft to 12 Asiancities on its way to Japan. A relay of 4374 runners then carried theflame throughout the country before arriving in Tokyo. This torch is notcomplete. It has the black (cast alloy) handle/holder base but ismissing the stainless steel gas cylinder shaft where the flame is lit. Almost all 1964 Tokyo Games torches that have survived are missing the cylinder piece. The top of the round holderis engraved "XVIII OLYMPIAD TOKYO 1964" with the interlocking OlympicRings. It has a diameter of 17 cm (less than 7 inches) and the wholehandle stands 20 cm (8") tall. The very bottom of the handle is engraved"NIKKEI YANAGI" denoting the maker and designer. The base handle/holder is remarkably preserved and remains in NM-MT condition. Hard to find one in such fine condition.
