As the first man to orbit the Earth, Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became an instant celebrity. As this Type 1 photo shows, the Soviet Union was not shy about using the young pilot’s fame to spread goodwill on an international stage. This photo was taken just months after Gagarin made space history when he visited London as part of the 1961 Russian Trade Fair. Gagarin is shown in his Soviet uniform shaking hands with Hugh Gaitskell, leader of Britain’s Opposition Party, as the wife of the Soviet ambassador looks on. The Type 1 photo shows nice toning from age with some light wear on its white border. The reverse has the original caption slug affixed and credit stamp. The photo has been graded Type 1 Authentic and encapsulated by PSA.
