The Sporting News is one of the most respected magazines in sports history. Their coverage of baseball has no rival and they are simply the most respected source of baseball statistics anywhere. Starting in 1960 the outstanding relief pitcher from both the national and American Leagues was awarded Fireman of the Year Award.
In 1961 the second year of the award's existence relief pitcher Stu Miller was bestowed this honor for his extraordinary relief pitching for the NL pennant winning the San Francisco Giants. During the season in 63 games Miller went 14-5 with a league leading 17 Saves and a 2.66 ERA.
In a 16 year big league career Miller played for the Cardinals Phillies New York & San Francisco Giants Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves. He appeared in 2 All-Star games and two World Series (1961 Giants National League Champions and 1966 World Series Champions Baltimore Orioles). He won a total of 105 games and saved 154 more.
The offered award was originally presented in trophy form but Miller became tired of dusting his trophies off and had them framed. This is the original plaque which adorned the award that was mounted to a gorgeous wooden based plaque. Original metal plaque measuring 4.5 x 11 has been attached to a 10.5 x 13 wood plaque. Great condition. Outstanding piece of Baseball History!
