The 1961 New York Yankees posted a season to remember. They finished the regular season with a record of 10953 eight games ahead of the Detroit Tigers and won their 26th American League pennant. Managed by Ralph Houk the Yankees went on to win the World Series by defeating the Cincinnati Reds in five games. Pitcher Whitey Ford was named the Fall Classic MVP. The regular season was highlighted by a headline-grabbing single-season home run record chase by teammates Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. In the end Maris wound up hitting 61 round-trippers to Mantles 54 and eclipsed Babe Ruths longstanding home run record of 60 set in 1927 in the process. This lot include a team-signed baseball from the Yankees that season. The OAL (Cronin) baseball includes 25 signatures in black ink including a pair of Hall of Famers on the sweet spot: Mantle and catcher Yogi Berra. Other notable autographs belong to Maris Ed Ford (a.k.a. Whitey) Tony Kubek Elston Howard John Blanchard Bob Turley Hector Lopez Bill Stafford Bud Daley Tex Clevenger and Bobby Richardson. The signatures show some slight fading but remain legible and would rate 7-8/10 in our book. A terrific piece of baseball memorabilia commemorating one of the greatest Yankees teams ever.
