Clarence “Choo-Choo” Coleman had a brief MLB career that began in 1961 with the Philadelphia Phillies. After signing with the Washington Senators at age 18, he eventually made it to the big leagues and appeared in 24 games with the Phils in ’61. His best season was 1962 with the New York Mets when he batted .250 with six homers and 17 RBI in 55 games. Inspired by Black catchers Roy Campanella and Elston Howard before him, Coleman was a rarity in his time. Slight of build for a backstop at 5’ 8” and 160 pounds, he was known for his quickness retrieving wild pitches and his speed on the base paths.
This offered flannel jersey was worn by Choo-Choo during his 1961 debut season in Philly. The home pinstriped button-up shirt has “Phillies” in red across the chest in chain-stitched lettering with white borders. A white strip tag with “C. Coleman” is sewn within the rear collar. Proper tagging by Wilson appears on the left front tail with a size 40 label. The “1961” year strip tag is sewn just below. Choo-Choo’s number “12” has been removed from the back as was the case with many vintage gamers that were recycled through the minors. Evidence of the correct number is clear. Otherwise, the jersey remains as issued and shows solid wear with pilling and light soiling.
