Having died so young, Roberto Clemente's autograph is coveted on any item, but especially on one of his vintage Topps cards. While his signed 1955 rookie and 2nd year issues may be more valuable, neither can match the scarcity of the 1960 Topps #326 issue. Only six signed examples exist in the PSA pop report, compared with 22 signed '55 rookies and 18 signed '56 cards.
With a PSA FR 1.5 card grade and authentic autograph, this one ranks third among dual-graded versions. However, what separates it is the period of the signature. Clemente's autograph style evolved from the 1950s to the '60s and early '70s. This rarely-seen version likely dates to just after his 1960 Topps card was released, right around the time Clemente and the Pirates were crowned World Series champs.
The landscape oriented card is crease-free with decent centering, clean borders, and evenly rounded corners. Some front surface wear was the likely culprit for its rather undeserving FR assessment. The blue ballpoint signature appears 6.5/10 in strength and eye appeal. Huge opportunity here for collectors looking to build a complete run of Clemente's signed Topps run.
