Offered here is a rarely seen gold-plated bronze participation medal from the 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome. Athletes were issued darker cast bronze medals for participating in these Games. However, a select few (presumably only gold medal winners) received this version specially made by the IOC. This one was awarded to American boxer Eddie Crook Jr. who took home gold in the Middleweight division.
Designed by Emilio Greco and minted by Bertoni of Milan, it measures 55 mm in diameter and weighs 89 grams. (The traditional cast bronze versions weight 78 grams; the additional 12 g accounts for the gold plating.) The obverse shows a nude female torchbearer in the foreground with the Olympic rings in the background. The reverse shows a flight of eagles soaring over the stadium of Rome. "Bertoni-Milano" (minter) is hallmarked on the bottom edge. The medal remains in extremely fine condition with no blemishes whatsoever. It comes in its original blue velvet presentation case. A superb example and the first gold-plated bronze version we've ever auctioned.
A highlight of these 1960 Games was American teenager Cassius Clay winning gold in the Light Heavyweight boxing division. This medal was sourced from the estate of his USA teammate Eddie Crook Jr. (died 2005) who took gold in Middleweight, one weight class down from "The Greatest."
