This black gym bag from The Champ's amateur years carries a "C. Clay" notation on the side in white and was used by Cassius Clay when he was a young amateur training at the Columbia Street Gym in Louisville Kentucky under the tutelage of Joe Martin the young police officer in Louisville recognized as helping to push the youngster into boxing. Clay gave the bag and other items to Joe Martin and they remained on display at the Columbia Gym until it closed. The bag has two brown leather stripes running up each side with some loss of leather at these locations. There are two black handles and a zipper at the top that is still operational. The handles are sewn to the bag and attached by four brown leather pieces one of which reveals some minor scuffing. The name C. Clay is printed in white at one corner of the bag and "Cassius Clay" is also printed in block letters on one of the leather pieces not the one that was subjected to minimal scuffing. There is quite a bit of leather loss from the from the two brown leather stripes on each side arguably the only condition issue with the bag. The bag is approximately 18 inches long 10 inches wide and 7 inches high. The bag was obtained from the granddaughter of the late Joe Martin who supplied an additional letter of provenance for the piece along with the Letter of Authenticity from Craig R. Hamilton of JO Sports Inc.
