Here then is a spectacular artifact from the original American Football League the upstart group that had the temerity to challenge the National Football League in 1960 to capture the hearts and minds (and Nielsen numbers) of millions of Americans. Aided no doubt by this particularly talented and colorful Houston Oilers squad that captured the first AFL title that year the league would parlay the genuine talents of hundreds of players with the league's avowed penchant for a wide-open offensive style into near parity in less than a decade and by its close had elbowed its way into the NFL's clubhouse with many of the top AFL teams assimilated neatly into the older league. This amazing tan football pays homage to that initial AFL Champion that included names like George Blanda Billy Cannon and Charley Hennigan each of whom has signed this remarkable football. Quarterback Blanda would go on to have the longest career in AFL/NFL history and earn a HOF nod; Cannon was the 1959 Heisman Trophy winner who made the quick transition from LSU to the fledgling pro league rushing for 644 yards om that championship season and then upping the ante to nearly 1000 the next year as he led the league. Hennigan scored the first touchdown in Oilers history and after a promising rookie season in 1960 promptly turned himself into one of the AFL's superstars by gaining 1746 yards receiving a pro-football record that stood for 34 years. In all nearly three dozen signatures appear on the historic pigskin including Allen Wharton Smith Johnston Jamison and Talamini with most of the black or green ballpoint signatures still legible despite some fading with age. The ball is a beauty befitting such historical oomph a Spalding Official American Football League ball with "Houston Oilers" stamped in block letters on one side of the panel below the laces and a striking Joe Foss facsimile autograph on the other side (first AFL commissioner).
