This is a complete 572-card set of 1959 Topps, and the two most important cards are graded. Mickey Mantle #10 grades PSA VG-EX 4. It has a bold red background and a strong portrait of the Yankee slugger, and the color is bright for the grade. Bob Gibson’s high-number rookie card #514 also grades PSA VG-EX 4. The colors are clean, the centering is nicely balanced and the back carries the red “Optioned to Omaha in April” line.
The rest of the checklist is packed with Hall of Famers, and the cards present very well. The roster includes Willie Mays #50, Hank Aaron #380, Stan Musial #150, Yogi Berra #180, Whitey Ford #430 and Roberto Clemente #478 (listed as “Bob” Clemente). Ernie Banks #350 is also here, fresh off his 1958 MVP season. So are Al Kaline, Warren Spahn, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Nellie Fox, Luis Aparicio and Frank Robinson. Orlando Cepeda #390 appears just after his Rookie of the Year campaign, and Harmon Killebrew #515 is a high number.
The ungraded cards are generally in the EX range or better. Color is vibrant, the surfaces are glossy and the images are sharp, with light corner wear. A few cards show minor edge touches. The backs are clean and include both white and gray stock. Having the Mantle and Gibson already graded settles the condition of the two most valuable cards. That makes this a strong example of an iconic Topps set.
