Charlie Neal played second base for the Brooklyn / Los Angeles Dodgers from 1956-61. In '59 he turned in the best season of his big-league career establishing career-highs in batting average (.287) hits (177) runs (103) RBI (83) and stolen bases (17) while launching 19 home runs and leading the National League with 11 triples. Another African-American star to shine in Dodger blue Neal also won the Gold Glove and earned a trip to the All-Star Game that season. But it was during the '59 Fall Classic that the then 28-year-old truly built his legacy. Neal batted .370 in L.A.'s thrilling four-games-to-two World Series triumph over the Chicago White Sox. This lot features Neal’s 1959 game-worn Los Angeles Dodgers home jersey from that incredible season.

The off-white flannel button-down jersey has the famed "Dodgers" script logo in classic Dodger bluefelt letters across the chest with Neal’s uniform number “43” in red felt on the front and repeated in blue on verso. Lower left front tail holds the proper "Rawlings Hall of Fame" label with adjacent "40" size tag. Just below that is  “Neal 59” positioned in chain-stitched blue. A wash tag appears on the inside front tail directly adjacent to a smaller "Set 1 1959" flag tag. The all-original jersey exhibits solid wear overall and is largely problem-free save for a couple of small markings on the back and a small slight tear on the back tail. A great piece of game-worn memorabilia commemorating Neal’s outstanding season and the Dodgers' first World Series title in the City of Angels. Who knows this could be the home jersey that Neal wore during the '59 Series. Several great photos on Getty of Neal in a white home Dodgers uniform that looks awfully similar to this one.

Includes LOA from the son of longtime MLB front office executive Mike Port who worked for many years under Buzzy Bavasi and later served as GM of the Angels and Red Sox. According to the family Port acquired the jersey directly from Charlie Neal.
