The 1959 Boston Red Sox only finished fifth in the AmericanLeague with a regular-season record of 78-84 but made history anyway that season by virtue of hiring a player by the name of Elijah Jerry “Pumpsie” Green. Green holds the distinction of being the first black player to play for the Red Sox the last pre-expansion major-league club to integrate. During his Boston tenure he was used mostly as a pinch runner or day-off replacement for starting infielders Pete Runnels and Don Buddin. Green made his MLB debut on July 211959 pinch-running in a 2-1 loss against the White Sox. This lot features a 1959 Boston Red Sox team-signed officialA.L. Reach (Harridge) baseball signed by 27 members of that year’s squad. The most notable signature is that of Hall of Famer Ted Williams on the sweet spot who was nearing the end of his prolific career in Beantown. Other notable signatures in blue ink on the baseball include Runnels Green 1958 A.L. MVP Jackie Jensen Vic Wertz and Frank Malzone.
