A rematch of the 1958 NFL Championship considered by many football historians as the greatest game ever played the result of this meeting was the same yet far more decisive. Down by a score of nine to seven entering the fourth quarter the Colts exploded for twenty-four unanswered points before surrendering a single meaningless touchdown to the Giants to complete the thirty-one to sixteen scoring. Presented here is a pendant celebrating that victory in the twenty-seventh annual NFL Championship game.
The oval-shaped pendant has the same design as the face of the Baltimore Colts 1959 NFL Championship rings presented to Colts players. Well-preserved in Near Mint condition it has "Baltimore Colts World Champions" in raised lettering around the perimeter on the front. Large CZ at center is flanked by two small blue stones and ivy design. Back has the raised image of a bucking horse within a horseshoe with the words "Colts 31 Giants 16 - 1959" on the horseshoe. The pendant appears to be gold-plated (no hallmark on back) measures 18mm in diameter and weighs 10 grams. It contains a loop to use for a chain and wear around the neck if so desired. Comes in its original blue Balfour presentation box (EX condition) stamped "Awards for Champions" on the outside. These pendants were given to the some players coaches and front office personnel in lieu of rings. The players also received watches for winning the 1959 NFL championship. Few have ever surfaced (one sold for $4500 at auction in 2008).
Additional LOA accompanies this historic piece attesting that this derived from the original collection of Lillian Henry who started as a secretary with the Baltimore Colts in 1953 and later served as a secretary to Colts officials and coaches including Weeb Ewbank Don Shula Don McCafferty Don Kellett and Ernie Accorsi.
