Mário Zagallo passed away in January 2024 at the age of 92. The Brazilian football great dedicated his life to the sport, first as a player and later as manager and coach for his beloved Seleção. His four FIFA World Cup titles – two as player (1958 and ’62) and two as manager (1970 and ’94) – are the most all-time by anyone at the international level. He also holds the record for reaching six World Cup Final matches as both player and manager.

This offered Brazil #11 jersey worn by Zagallo dates to 1958, the year of Brazil’s first World Cup triumph. His teammate, Pelé, was just a 17-year-old kid in his second year with the National Team. The yellow cotton shirt with an open green collar and ribbed green sleeve-ends has an early CBD (Confederação Brasileira de Desportos or Brazil Sports Confederation) crest embroidered on the left chest, with Zagallo’s number “11” on the back in green. Tagged by apparel companies Ceppo and Superball within the inner collar, it comes in size “REG” and exhibits strong evidence of wear, with noticeable soiling throughout and some spot staining on the left shoulder and sleeve.

Predominately a left winger, Zagallo used his technical skills and endurance to make up for his small stature. After starring for Rio de Janeiro’s famed club Flamengo, he was called up by Seleção in May 1958 and made a big splash with a brace in his debut vs. Paraguay. He earned a starting XI spot on Brazil’s 1958 World Cup squad and scored in the Final to help secure Brazil’s first FIFA trophy.

This shirt was gifted by Zagallo to Garrincha, his other famous teammate on Brazil’s historic 1958 and 1962 World Cup runs. Many forget that it was Garrincha who led Seleção to the ’62 title after Pelé got injured. In 1999, FIFA voted Garrincha seventh on its Player of the Century list. Garrincha eventually passed this shirt down to his daughter, who signed the included letter of provenance. Additional LOA from MEARS.
