In 1957 Walt Disney parlayed the public’s fascination with the swashbuckling Zorro character first portrayed by Douglas Fairbanks into an immensely popular live-action series. Topps joined in on the merchandising boom producing the 88-card set that you see here. This set was one of the first of the smaller-sized non-sports sets that Topps produced and it was plagued with production problems. Since Zorro was shot in black and white the set had to be put together from hand-colored black and white publicity shots and some on-set color photography. In addition to color registration issues these cards often suffer from centering and cutting problems as well. Needless to say building a set of this caliber is an astounding achievement.
This 1958 Topps Zorro complete set is rated the Number One Finest Set of All-Time on the PSA Set Registry with almost 60% of all the cards being among the finest known with nothing rated higher.
