1958 was the year people began to take notice of Baltimore’s third baseman Brooks Robinson. By the time he retired two decades later Brooks had revolutionized the way the position was played a feat recognized with an astonishing 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards. But that was in the future – this bat dates from Brooks’ first full season with the O’s. As far as provenance you can’t really get better than this: the bat was obtained by Tom MacDougal visiting team bat boy at Washington’s Griffith Stadium in 1958. The Hillerich & Bradsby factory records confirm that Robinson made two orders for O1S model bats during the 1958 season May 22nd and July 9. Though Robinson had played sporadically over the previous three seasons 1958 was his first full season in the majors and this is the earliest of his bats to come to auction.

The bat shows heavy use and has a cracked handle that has been repaired with small vintage bat boy nails. An abundance of ball marks with stitch impressions are on its barrel and there is some checking from repeated ball contact. The handle has been scored to enhance the grip and the model number “O1S” is stamped into the knob. To complete this museum-worthy bat Brooks has signed the barrel in black marker adding “HOF 83”. Exactly what you want from a rookie-era Brooks Robinson gamer.

Full LOA from PSA/DNA who have graded this bat GU 8.5. Full LOA from JSA for autograph.  Signed Letter of Provenance from the former Senators bat boy. Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
