Today especially in the postseason it's surprising to see a starting pitcher stay in the game long enough to get a decision. 60 years ago relief pitchers might as well pitch a tent in the bullpen and take a nap; there was often no need for them. The old-school approach was on full display in Game 4 of the 1957 World Series between the Milwaukee Braves and New York Yankees. Warren Spahn took the hill for the Bravos at County Stadium that day and went 10 innings giving up five earned but performing well enough to earn the victory over the Yanks. Thankfully fellow Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews ended the game in the bottom of the 10th with a walk-off homer; otherwise Spahn may have had to continue into the 11th and beyond.
This EX looking ticket stub from that contest has been signed by Spahn on the back in 9/10 black ballpoint. A nice find for the Braves fan looking to memorialize the franchise's only World Series title in Milwaukee. Shutouts in Games 5 and 7 closed the book on the Bronx Bombers that year and made Spahn Mathews and a young Henry Aaron household names in Cheeseland forever.
