One of the sport's most cherished ambassadors a true "lifer" as they say in the great game of baseball was the late Don Zimmer who passed away in 2014 after a remarkable 66 years of service. As a player long before wearing pinstripes alongside Joe Torre in the Yankees dugout and tussling with Pedro Martinez the stout 5' 9" "Zim" was a versatile infielder for the Brooklyn / Los AngelesDodgers from 1954-59. In '57 he was used primarily at shortstop and third base rotating with Pee Wee Reese and Charlie Neal. Zimmer's best season was in 1958 when he batted .262 with 17 homers and 60 RBI. This lot features Don Zimmer's 1957game-worn Brooklyn Dodgers home jersey from the club's final season in New York.
The off-white flannel button-down jersey has the famed "Dodgers" script logo in classic Dodger bluefelt letters across the chest with Zimmer’s uniform number “23” in red felt on thefront and repeated in blue on verso. Lower left front tail holds theproper "Rawlings Hall of Fame" label with adjacent "38" size tag. Justbelow that is “Zimmer 57” positioned in chain-stitched blue. A wash tagappears on the inside front tail directly adjacent to a smaller"Set 1 1957" flag tag. The all-original jersey exhibits excellent evidence of game use with some soiling/staining in the back collar and upper back. Overall it come largely as-issued and problem-free. A tremendous gamer commemorating the Dodgers' last days at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn worn by one of the true characters of America's pastime.
Includes LOA from the son of longtime MLB front office executive MikePort who worked for many years under Buzzy Bavasi and later served asGM of the Angels and Red Sox. According to the family Port acquired thejersey directly from Zimmer. Letter from MEARS with A8 grade.
