Detroit-born Dan Currie was an All-American linebacker and center for the Michigan State Spartans and was named MSU’s Most Valuable Player in 1957. On the basis of his spectacular 1957 MVP season Currie was the NFL’s third overall draft pick in 1958 and the first selection by the Packers. With Currie at linebacker the Lombardi-led Packers won back-to-back NFL Championships in 1961 and 1962 and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. To mark his 1957 MVP season in college Governor G. Mennen Williams awarded Michigan’s own son this Hamilton Electric watch.

The watch itself is a beautiful mid-century modern design that fully embodies the era it was awarded. The gold piece is engraved above the face with “MSU 1957” and a football. The face has a radiating pattern and the Michigan State “S” logo along with the Hamilton brand and “ELECTRIC”. The reverse is beautifully engraved with “Governor of Michigan Award to Dan Currie Most Valuable Player” and topped off with the facsimile signature of Governor G. Mennen Williams. The condition of the watch is excellent; the gold remains bright and there is very minimal wear to its surface. The engraving on both the front and reverse remains as legible as the day it was awarded. The brown leather watch strap is a replacement. The watch is housed in a lacquer presentation box and comes with Hamilton Watch booklet and a 5" by 7" press photo of Dan Currie in all his 1957 MSU glory. The consignor acquired directly from a Currie relative around five years ago.
