After setting a Georgia-Florida League record with 294 strikeouts pitcher Art Ceccarelli was drafted into the army for service in the Korean War. Ceccarelli returned home in 1953 making the majors in ’55 but his win-loss record reflected the fortunes of his team the cellar-dwelling Kansas City Athletics. The left-hander was traded to Baltimore in 1957 but he was again saddled with a mediocre team and finished the year 0-4. Ceccarelli was traded the following year to the Cubs where he rang up a streak of four straight wins. This jersey was worn during 1957 Ceccarelli’s lone season in Baltimore.
The gray road flannel has “Baltimore” across the chest above Ceccarelli’s number “16” in orange and black felt. The collar and front zippered placket are trimmed in black piping and a red white and blue Spalding label is sewn in the lower left front tail. The collar has a gray strip tag with “57 16 44” in black stitching. The left sleeve has the iconic smiling Oriole patch and Ceccarelli’s number “16” is sewn to the back in orange and black felt. The jersey shows ample wear with even toning and perspiration staining found around the collar area. There are several light turf and pine tar stains found on the body and there are some loose threads present. An all-original early Orioles jersey that displays beautifully. Sourced from a reliable Orioles collector.
