A beautiful second-year Topps card of the legendary Roberto Clemente, this 1956 Topps #33 is the Gray Back variation. The horizontal design pairs a striking portrait of the young Pirates outfielder in his black "P" cap with an inset action scene of Clemente leaping high against the outfield wall to make a catch, all set against a stadium-signage backdrop and finished with a facsimile autograph. The colorful cartoon reverse recounts that "Roberto was first signed by the Dodgers for a bonus" before heading to Pittsburgh from Montreal "via the draft" in 1955, and notes that he "took over a regular Pittsburgh outfield berth" during his rookie season.

That berth became the foundation for one of the most celebrated careers in baseball history. Clemente won four National League batting titles, 12 consecutive Gold Gloves, the 1966 NL MVP and the 1971 World Series MVP, and he collected his 3,000th hit on September 30, 1972, the final regular-season hit of his career. His life was cut short on December 31, 1972, when he died in a plane crash while delivering relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. In 1973, he became the first Latin American player inducted into the Hall of Fame, via a special election.

This example has been graded EX 5 by PSA (cert. #160333629). The card displays vibrant color and solid eye appeal, with wear consistent with the grade. An essential card of a baseball hero whose legacy extends far beyond the diamond.
