In 1961 the soft-spoken man from the frozen plains of North Dakota enjoyed one of the most amazing seasons in baseball history when he out-slugged his Yankees teammate Mickey Mantle to become the games natural home-run king. It was Mantle himself who said "Roger Maris was as good a man and as good a ballplayer as there ever was." Yet Maris was vilified by fans and the press and has never received his due from baseball historians.

In 1957 Maris broke into the major leagues with the Indians by going 3-for-5 on Opening Day against the White Sox and the next day he hit his first big league home run a grand slam game winner in the top of the 11th inning. His 14 rookie homers were followed by 28 in his second season which he started with Cleveland and finished with Kansas City. Offered here is one of the earliest Roger Maris game used bats known. Louisville Slugger factory records show that Maris' ordered this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby O16 in 1956 at the dawn of his Major League career that began in the Spring of 1957. The 35 inches of length and 32 ounces of weight perfectly match the records for this era. The bat shows heavy usage with many ball marks and deeply imbedded stitch impressions on the barrel. A handle crack has been expertly repaired revealing little trace of its existence. At the time of this bats service the man who wielded it could never have known what fate had in store for him.

Includes a LOA from MEARS (Graded A8).
