As a full-time manager Bob Scheffing led the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League to the 1956 PCL championship and was promoted to skipper of the parent Cubs the following season. In three full years at the Cubs' helm he compiled a 208-254 (.450) record. His 1957 team finished 62-92 and tied for seventh place in the eight-team National League but his 1958 and 1959 clubs won 72 and 74 games respectively and finished tied for fifth place both seasons.
This lot features the actual 1956 Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year trophy that Scheffing was awarded after guiding the Angeles to a 107-61 record. The team finished 16 games ahead of league runner-up the Seattle Rainiers. The trophy which sits on a two-tiered wooden base features a triumphant bronze award upon which sits a metal baseball. The front of the trophy includes a specially engraved plaque that reads: "BOB SCHEFFING PAC. COAST LEAGUE OUTSTANDING MGR. 1956 LOS ANGELES AWARDED BY PAC. COAST LEAGUE WRITERS' ASSN."
