Benny Bengough played the majority of his Major League Baseball career as a catcher for the New York Yankees during the 1920s when the team garnered the nickname of Murderers' Row due to their potent batting lineup. He played the final two seasons of his career with the St. Louis Browns. Bengough was a light-hitting defensive specialist. After his playing career he spent 18 seasons as a major league coach the longest stint with the Phillies from 1946-58. This beauty is a Philadelphia Phillies home jersey worn by Bengough during the 1956 season. The cream-colored flannel button-down garment showcases the unique vintage features of the Phillies' uniform style that was adopted in 1950: the red pinstripe pattern; burgundy chenille with white-edged embroidery cursive characters "Phillies" appears across the chest with stars to dot the "i"s. Lettering and Bengoughs No. 11 on the back reveal some fraying of the stitching; the jersey shows good game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind. Within the collar a felt tag is home to a black chain-stitched notation of "Bengough" and left front tail features a Wilson Size 44 label along with separate labels with washing instructions and a much-smaller addition tag with embroidered "1956." There is some fraying of stitching along an inseam on the back along with considerable separation of some of the burgundy chenille stitching on the No. 11 on the back and on the cursive Phillies lettering on the front.
