Despite Jackie Robinson's historic breaking of Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947 it did not immediately tear down the wall of prejudice in Organized Baseball; the road to equality was just beginning. Many of the country's minor leagues did not become integrated until many years later. In 1953 Hank Aaron along with black teammates Horace Garner and Felix Mantilla broke the color barrier in the South Atlantic League (better known as the Sally League) while playing for Jacksonville a Braves affiliate. Offered is a 1953 Jacksonville team signed ball penned in green ink by 19 team members including all three of the team's "racial pioneers." Aaron has signed the ball "Henry Aaron" on a side panel while the signatures of Garner and Mantilla appear together on an adjacent side panel. The lightly toned Wilson "Official League" ball displays a few scattered areas of minor age toning and bears the blue ink notation "1953 Jacksonville" across the ball label. Aaron quickly won over the fans that year in Jacksonville leading the league in batting average hits doubles and RBI en route to being named the MVP at season's end. A rare and significant team signed ball dating from Aaron's final season in the minors.
