Fresh off his National League Rookie of the Year 1951 season Willie Mays made his Topps debut as part their landmark 1952 baseball card series. Unfortunately for the New York Giants Mays went into the army in May 1952 putting a World Series reappearance on hold until 1954. The Topps rookie card of Mays is his hands down his most desirable baseball card period.
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA this is a thoroughly appealing card boasting exceptional color and print quality that truly sets this example apart from its contemporaries. Mays' portrait on the card front is vibrant and set against a background of the deepest blue imaginable and has been so precisely printed that even the subtle lines on the wall behind Mays' likeness (not discernible at all on lesser specimens) are pronounced and clear. The corners are well formed and the item's overall brightness is impeccable. Centering is just about 60/40 toward the left but certainly well within tolerance for the card's unqualified high grade. The back is very well centered perfectly printed and blemish free.
