In 1952 one year removed from a bumpy injury marred rookie season Mickey Mantle began to emerge from the shadow of a now-retired Joe DiMaggio displaying the skills that would ultimately help propel the Yankees to 12 pennants and seven World Series crowns in his fabled career. His 1952 numbers earned him the first of his 14 consecutive All-Star nods as he hit .300 (he would do that 10 times in all) and socked 23 home runs. Four seasons later he would top the 50-homer mark en route to a Triple Crown season and the first of his three American League MVP Awards. Recounting Mantle statistics often seems a hollow exercise; his place as an American almost-folklore phenomenon rests on the collective recollections of his legion of fans and sportswriters who worshiped him.

Presented here is one of the earliest Mantle game worn Yankees jerseys extant. The jersey is breathtaking in its presentation enhanced all the more by the bold oversized vintage Mantle autograph on the front left tail. Inside the collar is the Spalding & Bros. manufacturers tag with attached Size 44 flag tag. Below is the a white felt strip tag "M Mantle 52" embroidered in navy blue chain stitch. Inside the left front tail is a small washing instructions tag. On the left breast is a professionally replaced version of the original interlocking Yankees blue felt "NY" logo. All other elements of the jersey are original including Mantle's original No. 7 on the back in navy blue felt and the Yankees 1903-52 embroidered 50th anniversary patch on the left sleeve. The shirt displays excellent game use and aside from the restoration of the "NY" logo on the front reveals no other alterations save only for the vaguest shadow of earlier lettering possibly affixed to the front. The jersey comes with a Letters of Authenticity from MEARS designating an A7.5 rating based a .5 point deduction for spotting and 2 points deducted for the NY logo restoration.

Is difficult to overstate the magnitude of a signed and game-worn Mickey Mantle Yankees home jersey from 1952 however we feel safe in classifying it among the finest artifacts known from arguably the most beloved figure in modern baseball history.

LOA from MEARS graded A7.5. Full LOAs from JSA and PSA for autograph.
