Presented here is a rare Olympic silver medal from the 1952 Summer Games in Helsinki, Finland. It is one of the scarcest Olympic winner's medals from the post-war era as only 320 silvers (same number of golds and bronze) were struck. 70 years later, few have survived. This is the first silver we've ever offered and only the second '52 Summer winner's medal period. (We sold a gold for $18,368 in 2014.)

Designed by renowned Italian sculptor Giuseppe Cassioli and minted by Kultakeskus Oy, the medal is lettered "XV Olympia Helsinki 1952" in raised relief with a seated Victory on the obverse; the reverse portrays a scene of triumphant athletes. Measuring 51 mm in diameter, 3.5 mm thick and weighing 71 grams, the medal comes in very good overall condition despite the presence of some scratches and marks from handling. The relief and fine points are all well-defined. It comes in its original blue presentation case (NM) featuring the Olympic logo on the lid. Although the recipient and event are unknown, the medal survives as a wonderful Olympic artifact, the likes of which are rarely made available to the collecting public.
