Offered is a 1952 Bowman #101 Mickey Mantle graded SGC VG+ 3.5 (SGC cert. #9555582). Issued just one year after his 1951 Bowman rookie, this is the second Bowman card of the Yankee legend and one of the cornerstone cards of the postwar era.
The 1952 Bowman set is renowned for its painted artwork, with each card reproducing a color portrait set against a soft background and a facsimile signature across the lower front. Mantle's card captures the young Oklahoman in his Yankee cap at the beginning of a career that would come to define the franchise for nearly two decades. The 1952 season marked his emergence as a full-time star, as Mantle took over center field from the retired Joe DiMaggio, earned his first All-Star selection and helped the Yankees to their fourth consecutive World Series title.
This example presents with the strong eye appeal that collectors seek at the mid-grade level. The colors remain rich, the portrait is well defined, and the card carries the honest wear consistent with the VG+ designation, including softening at the corners and light surface wear. SGC's sharp black holder frames the card attractively and highlights the classic Bowman artwork.
Although his 1952 Topps card has gained a well-earned spotlight, many collectors consider the 1952 Bowman issue the more elegant design and a more accessible path to a vintage Mantle. This is an essential card for any serious Mantle or vintage Yankees collection.
