Dating back to the early 1900s “Gypsy Tours” were organized loosely and unofficially as a way for motorcycle riders to gather and enjoy other related activities of interest including races and hill climbs. One of the most popular spots in the country for this was – and still is – Laconia New Hampshire. Laconia was also the site for the annual 100-Mile MotorcycleNational Championship Race which staged veteran riders against one another competing on predetermined scenic routes and country roads.
This lot features the coveted Wynn Oil Company Trophy that was awarded to the winning rider of the 100-Mile Motorcycle Championship Race covering the decade of the 1950’s. The magnificent trophy stretches 37 inches tall and includes a large 30-inch two-handed brass trophy that includes a vintage motorcycle rider model on top. Sporting a multi-layered wood base the trophy includes a pair of engraved brass plaques on two of its four sides announcing the race as well as the winners’ names from 1951 to ’59.
The front plaque reads as follows: “WYNN OIL TROPHY 100-Mile National Championship Race Laconia New Hampshire 1951 – Dick Klamfoth 1952 – Dick Klamfoth 1953 – Edwin Fisher 1954 – Joe Leonard.” The side plaque reads: “100 MILE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RACE Laconia New Hampshire 1955 – Brad Andres 1956 – Brad Andres 1957 – Joe Leonard 1958 – Brad Andres 1959 – Brad Andres.” The impressive trophy weighs 24 pounds.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
