A poignant relic from one of football's most heartbreaking chapters, this silver medal was presented to Brazilian forward Baltazar (Oswaldo da Silva) for his role on the 1950 FIFA World Cup runner-up squad. Because the 1942 and 1946 tournaments were called off due to World War II, the 1950 World Cup, hosted by Brazil, was the first in over a decade. Two-time defending champion Italy suffered a stunning first-round exit. Uruguay, winner of the very first World Cup back in 1930, went on to defeated heavily favored Brazil in the final round's decisive match in front of 205,000 fans at Maracanã Stadium, a shock so profound it's still remembered as one of soccer's greatest upsets, immortalized as the "Maracanaço” (Maracanã Smash). It was also the first tournament where the trophy was called the Jules Rimet Cup, honoring the 25th anniversary of Rimet's tenure as FIFA president.
This ornate medal has an intricate design on the obverse with a raised relief depiction of Nike, Greek goddess of victory, spreading her wings and holding a laurel branch in each hand. "F.I.F.A.” is engraved at the top. The bottom has two small circular atlases depicting the Western and Eastern Hemisphere. The reverse reads "Coupe Jules Rimet World Cup” at the top and “Brasil 1950” at the bottom with a laurel wreath in between. Only the Brazilian players received these silver medals (made of genuine silver), and they were all designed with a loop on top. Measurements are 1.5” tall (38 mm) by 1” wide (25 mm) not including the loop. Weight is 16.5 grams. Remains in wonderful condition with little handling and no surface blemishes worth mentioning. Includes a 2010 letter of provenance from former Brazilian player, Joel Camargo.
