Impressive 1949 NCAA Track & Field Championship Trophy issued to University of Southern California. The meet took place June 17-18 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as the USC Trojans finished in first place with a total of 55 2/5 points. UCLA was second with 31 points Stanford was third with 30 and Michigan State finished in fourth with 26. These team scores are all labeled on a laminated nameplate on the face of the trophy. The "Trojan Point Winners" are also listed starting with Mel Patton who took first place in the 100 and 220-yard dashes. Patton was the 1948 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 200 meters and 4 x 100 meter relay at the London Games. The list includes the names of ten USC athletes who scored key points in their respective events to help the Trojans win the National Championship and has USC coach Jess Hill listed at the bottom. Below the nameplate is "IN MEMORIAM JOHN L. GRIFFITH" in large lettering to honor the man largely credited with starting the first outdoor NCAA Track & Field Championship meet. Griffith served as the Big Ten Conference Commissioner from 1922 until his death in 1944. A long nameplate at the bottom reads "19 - NATIONAL COLLEGIATE TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP - 49" and is flanked by two eagle figures. The wooden base of the trophy measures 18" by 6" with a middle section on which three large figures stand: two angels flanking a track runner at the top. The runner has lost some of its gold-colored die-cast coating but the two angels come in pristine condition as if they have been restored. In all it stands 20" high and weighs around 40 lbs. Comes in a Plexiglas presentation cube which protects it and displays it well.

Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
