Carl Lundquist rose from a local newspaper scribe in 1920’s Kansas City to become a respected sportswriter in the New York offices of the United Press. Lundquist’s sports stories were carried by countless papers across the country and he was later known for his work promoting Babe Ruth League Baseball. It was during his New York tenure with UP that he was presented with this commemorative 14K gold money clip from the New York Giants. The Giants finished in 4th place that season but that July set a National League record for most home runs in a month 55.
The money clip is constructed in the shape of a baseball bat and ball. The ball is inscribed with “GIANTS 1947” along with the intertwined “NY” team logo. The back of the clip is engraved with “CARL LUNDQUIST UNITED PRESS” and hallmarked “14K.” The money clip weighs 19 grams and shows light wear from use with the engraving bold and clear. A very scarce team-issued present awarded to one of the most read sportswriters of the post-war years.
