In 1947 Major League Baseball’s colorful history would change for the better. This was the monumental year when baseball’s color barrier was broken by African-American infielder Jackie Robinson. In that pivotal season the ’47 Dodgers won 94 games to take home the National League pennant and Robinson weathered his turbulent inaugural campaign by hitting .297 scoring 125 runs stealing 29 bases and taking home the very first MLB Rookie of the Year award ever presented. As was an all too familiar outcome in the Fall Classic the Dodgers lost to the New York Yankees that season four games to three. It wasn't until 1955 that Brooklyn finally got their revenge.

This lot features a well-worn 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers National League Championship ring that was presented to Dodgers scout Ken Johnson. It comes from his family estate and has never before been offered. The 14K (white) gold ring boasts a large diamond centered perfectly on top of a second larger blue stone. Raised lettering that reads “BROOKLYN BASEBALL CLUB” surrounds the blue stone with the Dodgers’ team name/logo in blue gracing both sides of the ring. The blue logos have faded over time. On the inside band it reads: “14K MURCHISON NEWARK.” Additional script engraving reads “Kenneth A.J.1947.” Ring size is 8 ¾. Weight 26 grams. A momentous treasure commemorating one of baseball’s most unforgettable seasons in history.

Includes letter of provenance from the scout’s grandson.
