Chicago-based photographer George Burke is widely known for the tens of thousands of baseball portraits he created from the 1920s until his death in 1951. He also branched out into other sports, such as professional football. His tenure as Chicago’s most prolific photographer coincided with some of the hometown Bears’ most powerhouse teams. From 1940 to 1946, the Bears won four NFL championships. The last one, 1946, saw the team sprinting to an 8–2–1 record under George Halas, recently discharged from the service. This beautiful team photo showcases the champions in their home park of Wrigley Field. Note that when Burke produced this piece, he neatly hand-lettered the text directly on the original negative in black ink, resulting in this Type 1 being developed with the title and names in white. A spectacular piece documenting one of the greatest Bears teams taken by one of the preeminent sports photographers. The front of the photo has wide white borders with creasing on the top and bottom left areas. The reverse has the Geo. Burke stamp. The photograph measures 10” x 8” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
