Presented here is a wonderful handwritten letter by Hall of Fame second baseman Johnny Evers (1881-1947) on Johnny Evers Company, Sporting Goods stationary, dated December 6th, 1945, in which Evers responds to an autograph request from a private overseas during World War II. He mentions he is "glad you received Joe Tinker's autograph, a great man and a great ballplayer." He ends the heartfelt letter with, "May God bless you, watch over you and return you to the one and only U.S.A. Good Luck, John [private's name]. Sincerely yours, John J. Evers." For good measure, his adds the famous "Tinker to Evers to Chance" inscription at the bottom. Evers' handwriting is done in beautiful cursive in 7-8/10 strength black ink. The 8.25" x 10.75" piece paper with light foxing. The Chicago Cubs double-play combination of Joe Tinker (SS) to Evers (2B) to Frank Chance (1B) was immortalized in baseball history by Franklin Pierce Adams' famous 1910 poem, "Baseball's Sad Lexicon."
