Relative to the abundance of Babe Ruth autographs appearing on objects such as baseballs, photos, checks, and other paper items, it is quite uncommon to find Ruth’s autograph on a bat. This stands to reason to some degree due to the cost and logistical limitations of transporting such an object, in addition to the item’s utilitarian nature. How many youngsters lucky enough to obtain Ruth’s signature on a bat could resist the temptation to lug his prize to the local sandlot and proudly wield it like of the great Bambino himself. One can imagine how few such treasures were simply stored away, protected from admiring handlers, and immaculately preserved through the ages. Well, here is your exception.
We are proud to present is one of the finest Babe Ruth autographed bats ever to surface in the marketplace. Originating from the collection of early sports collecting pioneer Cy Jones, this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby retail bat (35") bears a jet-black fountain pen ink inscription "With best wishes From Babe Ruth" graded MINT 9 by PSA/DNA. In addition to the unheard-of quality of the non-personalized inscription, the bat itself is in remarkable condition, with beautiful caramel coloration and minimal handling wear. An accompanying 1951 handwritten letter to Cy Jones with transmittal envelope from Ruth's widow Claire references her gift to him of the bat along with several other items. Jones' collection is referenced in the August 6, 1942 edition of The Sporting News, listing some of the highlight items, and noting that the best pieces had "been exhibited by Macy's, Abercrombie & Fitch and Spalding's in New York, and also was shown at the Polo Grounds, New York, in June, when it was loaned to the Navy Relief Society in connection with its All-Sports Carnival."
A remarkable Babe Ruth artifact with unmatched composite rarity and condition qualities. Letter of Provenance from Claire Ruth. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA (Mint 9). Full LOA from JSA.
